Movie Analysis - Good Will Hunting

Through that one particular scene, Will revealed the true nature of knowledge, which was that true knowledge is original and knowledge by others is artificial. One cannot claim or possess knowledge that was obtained by someone else.
Damon and Affleck gives another reality check on true knowledge and experience in the scene with Will and Sean on the bench. In the Harvard Bar, the issue discussed was on whether knowledge attained through others could be considered one's knowledge; however, the issue discussed on the bench was that true knowledge can be only attained through experience. Although Will is undeniably talented and a genius, through Sean, Damon and Affleck show his flaws in the fact that he is still a kid. Compared to Sean, Will has no experience and Sean makes sure he understands that. Will had only experienced life and knowledge through indirect channels such as books and information. He had never felt loss or loved someone more than himself. Sean distinguished this clearly for Will to show that although Will was knowledgeable, he was not experienced enough to be wise. Only through loss, mistakes, and failures can people truly learn not to make mistakes. .
Not only did Sean teach Will about experiencing failure and loss, Sean taught Will about experience and imperfections by talking about missing the Big Game at Fenway. To Will's surprise, Sean never went to the Big Game at Fenway even though he explained it as if he was there. Sean only went to a bar with his wife to watch the game. Will was shocked that Sean chose to be with his wife rather than going to the game with his friends to watch such a crucial moment. However, Sean points out that the best experiences are experienced with the people who one is with. Therefore, rather than remembering what he could have experienced had he went to the actual game with his friends, Sean remembers the event being with his wife. Precious experiences depend on who they are spent with and as long as one is happy, that experience transforms into a memory, not of regret, but of satisfaction.
