Imagine feeling lost and not knowing what to do or where to go. You spend each night in the musky weather on a bench, under a bridge or even in an alley. Knowing that you are not judged by who you are but what you are, you realize that most people in society does not understand the true definition of homelessness. If you don't give much thought homelessness seems like a simple enough word. If you ask people to define the word they are likely to tell you that it means being without a home. That definition, or something closely resembling it might be thought of "the street definition." (Shumsky 2012) According to Webster's Dictionary homeless means "those people who have no permanent residence, especially those who live outdoors due to poverty." Throughout the world it is impossible to count the exact amount of homeless men, women and children, but it is known to be millions. Every day in the cities, countries and town's homeless people walk around with filthy rags often begging for money and food. Most are carrying plastic bags or pushing shopping carts that house all or most of their personal belongings. The reasons for being homeless can be different: It can be from rent being to expensive, low salaries, mental disabilities, addictions to various things, and the loss of a family member who was the sole provider. The government of different states have developed some social programs to find solutions to the problems, but unfortunately the numbers have still been rising. A growing shortage of affordable housing has made climbing out of homelessness nearly impossible for someone who lives in extreme poverty already.
The problem of homelessness had not reached a severe level until the early 1980's. (Burger 115) Most people in society think that the dirty, smelling homeless show some sort of signs of addiction whether it be drugs or alcohol. The homeless people who choose to do such things set a bad example for other homeless individuals who truly need help.
