The Battle of Teutoburg Forest

As he entered Teutoburg forest, he did so without entering combat formation and without any proper reconnaissance. These issues were made worse that the forest recently had a bad storm so the pathway was narrow and very muddy. Arminius used these elements to his advantage by sending skirmisher forces and light infantry to break up the Roman formation. The Roman legions were already isolated because they weren't in combat formation. Arminius made sure they couldn't link up and organize which destroyed the Roman's one major advantage over the Germans. With these heavy German attacks and the inability for the Romans to organize and fight as a unit like they were accustomed to the casualties were extremely high for the Romans. As night fell the Romans were able to set up a fortified night camp to try an reorganize and plan how to fight back. The next morning the Romans broke out from their camp and attempted to escape by marching through another forested area. This led to extremely high casualties for the Romans and Roman's were constantly being attacked by missile fire and had no defense against it because the roman archers couldn't fire their bows as they were wet from the constant storms hitting the battlefield. Roman shields also became extremely heavy from being waterlogged by the rain making them even more vulnerable to the Germanic warriors. As night came the Romans attempted to escape the forest again but they fail into another one of Arminius' traps. The Germans had built a narrow pathway through a swamp leading to a wall they had constructed. The Romans funneled onto the narrow pathway to try and attack the German wall but their lack of numbers just led to even more casualties which were further extended by the lack of anywhere to retreat to for the Romans. At this point, the Romans had begun to disintegrate as the Romans devolved into an every man for himself mentality. Varus' second in command, Numonius Vala, abandoned the army taking the entire Roman calvary regiment with him but his calvary were chased down by Germanic horsemen and slaughtered.
