Exercise, Medication and Reducing Stress

There is an extensive nine step method to diagnose depression. This testing is routine among psychiatric doctors before prescribing medications. However, most people suffering from stress see a non-psychiatric doctor. About 30% of general doctors did not use the recommended testing method for diagnosing depression but, in some cases prescribed medication (Science 20.com). The number of teenagers receiving medications for depression has doubled over the past 5 years. One in nine teenagers is prescribed additive medications. There is a significant amount of misuse of prescription medications, estimated to be around 7.5 Million young women (Addiction info.org).
Anti-depressant and addictive medications are a $12 Billion dollar business. Requiring doctors to conduct a more extensive evaluation of their patient before prescribing a medication will eliminate some misdiagnosis and abuse having a negative effect on sales. This will be not be appreciated by doctors and industry because the doctors skills will be tested and challenged and drug companies will lose sales. Some people who have been prescribed medication give them to their friends or take themselves for recreational purposes. Since these pills were prescribed by a doctor, it is believed the drugs are less harmful than illicit drugs. Abuse and misuse of prescription drugs can lead some people to experimenting with illegal substances such as drinking, marijuana and mushrooms.
Prescribed drugs have many potential side effects including addiction, suicide, and panic attacks. By taking the medication the person is passing on their responsibility for well-being from themselves to the doctor. This may lead to a worsening of the person's confidence and self-esteem. Medication can help relieve some symptoms of stress, tiredness, self-esteem and confidence but the body builds a tolerance requiring a higher and higher dosage which can lead to an overdose.
