Graffiti - The Art of Awareness

Graffiti is now becoming an increasingly popular and important style of art. In many countries all over the world, graffiti or street art can be found on public walls or buildings. It was mainly found in inner city communities, where poor youths tried to give themselves a "voice". It began as them just writing their names on subway trains trying to get fame and notoriety. The artists then realized they could express themselves through a can or two of spray paint and graffiti escalated because everybody wanted to be "heard." What was once only just for recreation or used to mark territories, became an art form and a means of expression. Graffiti artists tend to portray vivid emotions through their art in hopes of having an impact on people who see the art. Many of them depict political and social issues that usually affect their lives and the lives of the community they are in. Banksy is one such artist who manages to use his art to bring the awareness of social problems to the audience's attention, especially in his piece, "I Hate Mondays".
Banksy is one of the most famous and notorious street artists of the time. His use of stencils was and still is different from what other artists use. However, the lack of a face to the name and the unusual style of street art were not the only reasons Banksy rose to fame. The style as well as the messages being conveyed, strayed from the "norm" that graffiti had become over the decades. Banksy's art is usually graphic and controversial and depicts, using cruel ironies, sometimes racial and class injustices, social, political and even religious issues. In reference to the art work, "I Hate Mondays" (I Hate Mondays), Banksy portrays different conflicts. .
Firstly, it brings to attention just how barren and unlivable developing countries are and how much the people there are suffering. According to Lifland, there are over 850 million people starving around the world due to food shortages and famine as well as droughts (Lifland).
