Their journey is less than pleasant. On September 15, they docked in Liverpool, England, and rode the train south to their new homes. Here, they presume rigorous training. The wrote letters of refusal to serve under him. Colonel Sink steps in and transfers Winters in and Sobel out. Winter's men now excel through training and quickly become the Army's best unit of the war. .
D-Day arrives and as the Screaming Eagles jump from their planes, unexpected weather creates mass confusion. All of the soldiers are separated and strewn about. Chaos and confusion follow as well as acts of heroism. Soldiers scrambled to find one another as they were dropped behind enemy lines. Operation Eagle, although not executed as planned, was a success. They took out the long range guns and captured Carentan. The Germans launch a huge counted attack, but the 101st was able to hold off long enough until tanks from the 2nd Armored Division arrived.
As the scattered men advance and find one another, heroes arise and acts of valor are performed. German resistance takes its toll, but the men of Easy Company prevail in combat with other companies and battalions. Through the hedges and flooded fields of the French countryside, the men advance. The company reequips and reinforces back in England, then sets off for yet another airdrop, this time into Holland. Smoother than their first, Easy's drop is more organized and virtually no German resistance is met.
