Homelessness in Boston

Permanent housing provides stability that enables people to find and retain employment. Even though Massachusetts carries a law that gives qualified people a right to have a place to stay, some still live on the streets. Boston struggles to maintain homeless people in shelters, there is no enough amount of space to support the number of people in need. Motels are being used to accommodate thousands of the homeless people in Boston.
             Boston had an increase of six percent of families without a home in the past year, which is very high comparing to other cities that were surveyed. Greene mentions that one of the reasons that this problem became major is the substantial cut in the state's rental assistance program. Around seventeen thousand people needed the shelters in the year of two thousand thirteen and a big part of these people have some physical disabilities or a major mental illness. Boston also has a lack of services for these homeless people with mental and physical problems. This is another issue that needs to be resolved among the homelessness. It has to be an answer of why this problem has been increasing throughout the years and a solution to solve this problem needs to be addressed in Boston.
             The problem with homelessness in Boston is major and requires special attention. In efforts to resolve this, the former governor Deval Patrick introduced in the year of two thousand fourteen some programs to help the homeless people. This initiative will help hundreds of people that have been homeless for a longtime. According to CBS local news [2] the program will help families by reducing the amount of taxpayer and will also provide access to adequate long-term housing. This project is called "Pay-for-success" and if it succeeds in the first year will have fifty house units and by six years nearly five hundred units. Patrick said in a statement when he launched the program "It is critical that we reduce the reliance on emergency services and provide individuals safe and stable housing that will help strengthen our communities and last for generations to come.
