Barbie Doll by Marge Piercy

352. After so long she could not handle the things that people thought and said about her. A fan belt has a life span and after so long it dies out. Everyone has their limits and there is only so much a person can take before finding a solution. The girl in the poem did not have the best solution, because she committed suicide. "So she cut off her nose and her legs and offered them up." Marge Piercy pg. 352. .
"Barbie Doll" was written in 1973, but in todays society we still deal with these same issues. Girls are supposed to play with dolls and makeup and boys are supposed to play with cars and trucks or else they might grow up to be something that is not normal in society's perspective. Society expectations of women are to have that perfect body and perfect hair and skin. There is a lot of pressure put on women, all the celebrities in the media look flawless in every photo taken of them and they work out all the time to get that "perfect" body. When girls are young and they see these women in magazines they wonder why they can't be as pretty and perfect as they are. Why can't they have the perfect skin those women have, why do they have pimples and not airbrushed skin. Society affects how girls see themselves and their confidence from a young age. .
One thing everyone should love is themselves. You have to live the rest of your life being the person you are, so you should feel comfortable in your own skin. As long as you feel good about yourself, society's opinion should not matter. Not everyone is gonna be able to get that perfect body or perfect skin, because like I said before we were all made differently. We can't always be everyone's idea of beautiful, but there will still be people out there that see the beauty in you. You do not have to look like what society's idea of beautiful is to feel beautiful. I think that is an issue a lot of women struggle with.
