The Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

The United States tried to justify the use of the atomic bombs by saying that, "The Survey has estimated that the damage and casualties caused at Hiroshima by the one atomic bomb dropped from a single plane would have required 220 B-29s carrying 1,200 tons of incendiary bombs, 400 tons of high-explosive bombs, and 500 tons of anti-personnel fragmentation bombs, if conventional weapons, rather than an atomic bomb, had been used" (Anesi)

The effect on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki due to the atomic bombs are disturbing. Over 80,000 people were killed just in Hiroshima alone. In Nagasaki, the radiation from the blast was more intense than that of Hiroshima. "The duration of the flash was only a fraction of a second, but it was sufficiently intense enough to cause third degree burns to exposed human skin up to a mile" (Anesi). The indescribable harsh consequences of the atomic bomb were disastrous. In the instantaneous aftershock, the bomb burnt clothing, and melted or destroyed anything in its path. Not to mention the after effects of the bomb that were almost as overwhelming: "Symptoms of their effect on human beings close to the center of the explosion, who survived other effects thereof, were generally delayed for two or three days. The bone marrow and as a result the process of blood formation were affected.Death generally followed shortly thereafter. The first symptoms were loss of appetite, lassitude and general discomfort. Within 12 to 48 hours, fever became evident in many cases, going as high as 104∘ to 105∘ F., which in fatal cases continued until death" (Spennemman). While the Emperor did surrender five days after the U.S. dropped the atomic bombs, there still is no justification for the amount of destruction and suffering that the Japanese people were subjected to.
The United States government tried to defend their use of the atomic bomb on Japan, though some such as Rear Admiral L.
