Redskins pride has been nothing but positive ever since Lancaster opened 62 years ago. With each t- shirt, poster, and banner hung with the Redskins logo on it, there was a sense of pride being spread around the school. Tradition has been a huge part of Lancaster. It's something the school values and something the students and faculty wanted to protect and past down from generation to generation. Changing the mascot name is taking away the years and years of tradition the students and faculty fought to uphold. It's taking away the pride and joy of Lancaster alumni, current students, and future students. .
The Redskins name has been around for years and years, 62 to be exact. Why has it become a problem now? For all these years no Native American has spoke up and said it was offensive. So why now? Why is 2015 the year they decide that it is offends them. If it was such an issue why wasn't it dealt with earlier instead of later? Never once has a student yelled out Redskins during a game or an assembly and ever meant it to be offense. Yes, we don't have a very populated school of Native Americans, but even if we did, the term would never be used to discriminate anyone. .
If a national football team can keep their name as Redskins why can't we? The Washington Redskins foot ball team has fought to keep their name and the fuss about it has died down. Supporters of the name say that it honors the Native Americans achievements and virtues and is not attended in any negative matter. The Lancaster Redskins should be looked at this way also and not punished for something they strongly believe in and want to continue on with. Others schools shouldn't be boycotting playing our sports teams because of a stupid mascot name, that's ridiculous. Lancaster was pretty much bullied into changing their name because if not there would be no sports seasons, and that's a huge part of our school too. .
Making the decision to change the mascot name should have waited till after graduation.
