Keep Your Head in the Game

"Keep your head in the game!," Coach Hanks would always shout out to all of us that were members of the Pirates Little League baseball team. As a group of kids that were between the ages of 9 and 10, we were sometimes not interested in what was going on in a game. This seemed to be a habit of those of us, including myself, that were placed in the outfield. There's not much action in the outfield and one can easily get distracted; daydreaming or seeing something colorful and winged would be more appealing to one's eye. .
I was prone to watching birds, butterflies, and airplanes; I was known among my teammates as one to have the ball land next to me instead of my glove. Left field was where the less-coordinated kids or in my case, the easily-distracted, would be placed so that no harm or baseballs would come to us except every now and then. The ball would never come to me. My role was to stand there with my glove and make sure the green grass stayed nice until it was our turn to bat.
I would make sure to help my team with my hitting skills when we were up to bat; playing defense just seemed boring to me. I didn't complain about my role in left field. Coach Hanks liked that I could hit a ball but always would say that sometimes making a catch would be the difference between winning and losing. Little things counted is what he implied.
Three innings passed with no action in my little patch of green grass. I did manage to get on base twice with a hit and a walk. In the fourth inning, I got distracted by an airplane that was lazily flying over my head. During my distraction, I did not hear the crack of the bat or see the ball. That ball ended up getting past me. My mistake allowed the other team to tie the game up and coach didn't seem too happy with my excuse. He was right. You have to keep your head in the game. I had one more at-bat and I did get a hit that got our lead back to two runs when I scored two of my teammates to home with an easy double.
