Kifwebe - The Wooden Head

Moving down to the bottom the lines appear to move back to being very curved. All the lines used in the piece are smooth and precise. Certain shapes stand out because they are used only once such as the carved x-shape that can be seen on the mouth, and the slanted rectangles inside the eye sockets. .
The mask's eyes are every large, unnaturally misshapen and disproportional to the rest of the face. They also bulge out from the face. There is a very unnatural looking inward break between the nose and mouth, and the mouth protrudes very far out from the face of the mask in relation to the chin area which is set way back on the piece. Many of these feature appear elongated, strange and very unnatural. the nose on the mask blend into the face as it seems to appear from the mohawk looking feature that starts at the most back point of the mask. The mask is darkly colored with different shades of black, brown, grey, burnt orange and burgundy. Much of the brown on the mask appears to come from unpainted wood the mask is made out of while all the other colors come from pigments that are meticulously applied in thin long lines stacked on top of one another up and down the entire mask. The surface of the mask while not jagged is bumpy and not finely sanded. much of the mask's surface is covered by thin ribs that go in a curved line shape along the sides and down the front of the piece. Each rib has its own color, colors eventually repeat and a somewhat recognizable pattern is noticeable. .
The mask is displayed with light coming from above shining down on the piece. With this type of lighting the construction of the mask causes there to be four areas that appear to be in almost total darkness they are: under both eyes, under the nose, and under the mouth. The light also causes the mask to cast hard shadows on the wall the mask resides on. The sides, surface of the nose and mouth are the most well lit areas on the mask.
