Mask, also known as "kifwebe," at the Fitchburg Art Museum is a face mask hung on the wall in very high relief, it is meant to be viewed from the front as well as both the sides but the back is kept from being seen. The mask is about twenty two inches long by twelve inches wide at its widest width and around eight inches at it most narrow point. It is approximately fifteen inches deep at its deepest point and around four inches at its least deep section. The mask is made out of wood and different pigments cover much of the surface. The mask comes from the Songye people from The Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a realistic size and could be worn by the average person. The mask is in perfect condition. It doesn't appear to be missing any pieces or appear to have suffered any damage anywhere. It looks as if it was very well preserved. All the different colors used are still visible. .
The mask itself is truly symmetrical, one side being a perfect mirror image of the other side. From the side the mask appears to have an oval shape with two large pieces removed at the bottom and a the smaller piece in the middle. Facing straight on the mask looks like a rectangles with both sides bent in topped by a triangle shape with a sharp point erecting from the top of the triangle. The mask is made up of very sharp definite lines, it was made with detail and uniformity in mind. Many different shades of dark pigments are used on the mask and the lines created by the different colors on one side of the mask perfectly match with the colored lines on the other side. Curved lines and half ovals are the predominant shapes used on the mask. There appears to be very few lines that come close to being straight anywhere on the mask. There seems to be a system or pattern to where the curvature of the lines is most severe. It looks like as one views the piece from top to bottom the lines and features start very curved and rounded but as one makes their way to the mid section of the mask a gradual move away from curvature and toward more straight features seems to occur.
