Nick Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream

The first time Kevin Kline's character can be appreciated in the film is in the cities plaza, where he has gathered with his fellow actors ready to prepare a performance of Pyramus and Thisbe for the Dukes wedding party. Bottom, played by Kline, insists on playing multiple parts. He loves to be the center of attention, this characteristic becomes evident from the moment his character is first introduced he wants everyone to see him. He demands to not only play Pyramus, but also wants to portray the female character of Thisbe, "An I may hide my face, let me play Thisbe too" (1.2. 43). Bottom's desire to be noticed makes him an easy target because of his innocence and this creates the comical situations he gets himself into. His very on wife laughs at Kline's version of Bottom, calling him a worthless dreamer in the movie rendition. Although this didn't take place in the original play, it would be easy to see that it could. Bottom feels that his very person relies on the success the play receives from the Duke. He places such high standards upon himself that he has set himself up for failure. Trying to interact in a world that is unfamiliar proves to be far too much for the "weaver". It is evident many times when he is corrected for misusing words. One such example would be in Act I when he tries to lead Peter Quince in calling the actors. "You were best to call them generally, man by man, according to the scrip (1.2. 256-257). Bottom should have said call the individually, this is one of many wording mistakes he makes throughout the play and movie. Bottom at times realized that he was being laughed at instead of with. But those times were few and far between. Bottom as well as Kline's Bottom was both so full of themselves and this confidence landed them in tight situations but allowed the audience to laugh in spite of the serious situations that were going on with the other characters.
