The Islamic Faith in Florida


             We share different nationalities, culture, and religion. I am currently majoring in international relations focusing in the Middle East. The Middle East is a hot topic and seems to always be in the media, but I believe the media has created a different interpretation of the Middle East. People relate terror, violence, and events like 9/11 to Arab Muslims without really knowing about the race and religion. I decided to visit a Sunni mosque because I am really interested in their religion and way of thinking. The majority of Muslim are Sunnis which include 85 percent. Sunni recognize themselves as the guardians of Islam. Islam is one of the major religions in the world. Islam is known to be a monotheistic religion that developed in the Middle East. Islam means submission or to surrender. This religion was founded by Prophet Muhammad as an expression of surrender to the will of Allah because he is the creator. Within Islam there are several branches, the two major branches have a different interpretation of Islam. .
             Islam has fundamental practices which are he five pillars. The testimony of faith called the Shahada. Prayer which must be perform five times a day. Supporting the needy, giving zakat. Fasting during the month of Ramadan. The pilgrimage to Mecca. Go to the hajj at least ones in a lifetime. Muslim gather in the mosque to worship and pray to Allah. The Quran is the sacred text of Islam. Islam expanded from the Arabian Peninsula to influence in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Muslim get together in a Mosque to worship even though they are free to worship anywhere in any sort of temple. Muhammad made Friday the special day for Muslim worship. Muslim are led in prayer by an Iman. This person is not necessarily a priest but someone chosen in the community to lead in prayer. The Friday service also includes a sermon. .
             Before prayer, there is a process you should follow to be cleansed. In the mosque they have facilities for washing the hands, feet, and face before prayer.
