The Past and Present of East Harlem


            
             East Harlem is also known as Spanish Harlem and El Barrio is a neighborhood located in Upper Manhattan, New York. East Harlem is a place full of people who embrace there culture. They take so much pride in their neighborhood even though they suffer from social issues. East Harlem has the highest jobless rate in New York City. They also suffer from a high rate in teenage pregnancy, AIDS, drug abuse as well as homelessness. The schools in East Harlem are generally characterized by low test scores, high rates in drop outs and absence rates.
             Introduction .
             East Harlem is a thriving community that needs stability. Throughout East Harlem the diverse communities have proclaimed cultural identifies through the arts, dance, and drama. The art and architecture of "casitas" has been featured in museum exhibits. East Harlem is a beautiful community that needs help in certain areas in the neighborhood. The reason for this research is to open people's eyes and reach out to East Harlem. Not a lot is heard about them unless there is a drastic event. My method of research and attaining information was by collecting data from online articles and published reports. .
             I hope to show the good side of Harlem and how much the good out ways the bad. Even though crime rate is very high in East Harlem the community is still very active in their neighborhood. They are a friendly community who needs help bettering the neighborhoods. They need help informing young teens to protect themselves from AIDS and teen pregnancy. .

             History of East Harlem.
             In the mid-1600s the Dutch settled in the area of Upper Manhattan, before it was known as Nieuw Harlem. The Dutch created villages, farmsteads and churches, just like the Reformed Low Dutch Church which is now known as 125th St. and First Avenue. The farmstead continued until the late 1830-1850s when the construction of the New York and Harlem Railroad. Later on the horse-drawn rail lines converted into steam and electricity.
