Freedom in The Lottery and Antigone

Summers and Old Man Warner and the rest of the villagers.
In the Antigone there is more of a religious rite, but conflict arises. Which law is more important, the laws of God or the laws of man. As one would see Antigone believes in divine law and her persistence to bury Polyneices shows that she is willing to risk her own life for the proper burial of her brother despite what Creon has ordered. Antigone states, "It was not God's proclamation. That final Justice that rules the world below makes no such laws. Your edict, King, was strong But all your strength is weakness itself against the immortal unrecorded laws of God. They are not merely now: they were, and shall be, operative for ever, beyond man utterly." (Sophocles 1213) She firmly believe that was she has done is the right thing and is willing to face the death penalty. Antigone made a rational decision to bury while talking to her sister Ismene, who wants nothing to do with Antigone's plan. " You have made your choice, you can be what you want to be. But I will bury him; and if I must die, I say that this crime is holy: I shall lie down with him in death, and I shall as dear to him as he is to me." (1205) Antigone is very confident that what she believes is the right choice, using her liberty to deny authority for her personal responsibility.
Family essentially is meaningless when it comes to The Lottery. After Bill Hutchinson had opened his slip his wife, Mrs. Hutchinson had brought to attention unfairness in the situation. "I tell you it wasn't fair. You didn't give him time enough to choose. Everybody saw that." (Jackson 251) Despite her concern for unfairness Bill nods when asked by Mr. Summers if he is ready. At this time Bill had full control to go against Mr. Summers based on his wife's concern, but instead followed along with the ritual. Each member of the Hutchinson family picked a slip and opened it.
