"I want a wife who will keep my house clean. A wife who will pick up after my children, a wife who will pick up after me" (419). Many women have heard this before, but nowadays, they are taking a step away from the common role of a "house wife". In today's modern society women have achieved so much; from being simple "house wives", to CEOs in major companies. There are several reasons why women have progressed so much, such as changes in culture, diversity in government, and in some cases, changes in society standards.
Women have always held the role of the "caretaker" in a marriage, and in American society. They have had to give up their education and careers, just too simply be the husband's extra hand. In a typical family, the mother took care of the children, kept the house clean, and catered to the husband's every need. Because of the stigma society had set upon them, women from diverse social economic status would not dare cross gender roles. Even if they chose to cross the stereotypical role of a "house wife" and join the work force, they would not have been given an equal opportunity to hold a "mans" position, like a police officer or a fire fighter. They would have had to settle for a less lucrative job, like a waitress or a secretary. .
The culture changes that have occurred over time, have been a great beneficiary to women's progress in the work field. Unlike before, women now have the opportunity to better themselves academically and in the workforce. The stereotype of a "house wife" was set by our older generations' culture, like our grandparents and great grandparents. Today's generation is moving away from the "old" culture ways, at an astonishing rate. Younger people are now more open to women working in a "man's" job. Women are now specifically targeted by government job recruiters.
