History of the Protestant Reformation

Ulrich Zwingli a Swedish reformer emphasized the idea of inner piety to promote "The Zwinglian Reformation"(Doc 5). Zwingli began the Protestant Reformation in Switzerland. He accused the pope of misinterpreting the bible. Zwingli believed that the teaching of inner piety would allow them to feel closer to God. He also didn't believe in external piety such as pilgrimages, fasting showing no interest for art, music and dance. He wanted his followers to connect to god with their heart where he could see the evil and the good. He believed the actions of the followers could not be made just for idea of completing the job, not using the heart to motivate one to feel a change within themselves. In John Calvin's "A look at the giver", he bans out all early sinful acts (Doc 6). He also wanted his followers to cover themselves without showing others their inexpensive clothing. Calvin believed in external piety and no dancing, or wearing make-up. He believed that this was a way of avoiding sinful manners rather than following Catholic teachings of selling indulgences. He placed a high emphasis on the sovereignty of God, and felt that certain people were predestined to go to heaven while others were doomed to hell. Calvin felt that this would create a peaceful environment where everybody was equal from their appearances and actions.
Many Catholics criticized the act of selling indulgences. A German prince during the 16th century stated complaints of the selling of indulgences (Doc 4). It was one of the grievances the German prince had been accused of. The Germans did not want to be told what to do by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. The Germans didn't want to be a part of Charles V. In an image titled "Hawking Indulgences" the artist illustrates the rapid speed of the selling of indulgences (Doc 9). The image showed all classes of people buying indulgences. The authors quote showed how the Popes received huge amounts of coins.
