Ecology is the study of the branch of biology dealing with the relations and interactions between organisms and their environment, including other organisms. In Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" (2007), she discusses her personal experience with self-grown eating and lists people that she met and create relationships with. The book revolves around the concept of improving her family's diet by eating only foods that they were able to grow themselves or obtain from the local market. The plan was to eat only organic products for a year. She spends much of her time explaining her family's reaction to their experiment, telling everyone about the rigorous sacrifices they had to make. Barbara Kingsolver argues that putting the kitchen and farms back at the center of family life would help diversify the American diet. Many Americans need to limit the amount of harmful products they consume because it is a danger to them and the environment. Eating farm grown products were not an issue in the book. Growing your own food is the best way to ensure a constant supply of fresh and healthy organic produce that is environmentally/cost friendly. .
Barbara Kingsolver expresses "We wanted to live a place that could feed us: where rain falls, crops grow, and drinking water bubbles right up out of the ground" (Kingsolver 3). I n this quote she described what type of environment her family would be most comfortable. They left loved ones and fellow friends behind in order to pursue their goals. When they moved to their new home, the family plotted lists and strategies involving their new diet. They had to survive the winter months without tropical fruit. Rhubarb would stand in for some of the fruits and tomato sauce and canned preserves would line the shelves. Fresh eggs would be collected from hens, turkeys and roosters. These eco friendly methods help improve the environment.
