Charles Lindbergh, Controversy and Fame


            Charles Lindbergh's life was filled with much controversy. He was someone who was considered to be a hero in the eyes of Americans after his nonstop flight across the Atlantic. One of his other achievements was the invention of the artificial heart which he developed for a surgeon. He also endured the tragic kidnapping and murder of his young son. Later he would become someone who was considered by many to be a traitor to his country due to his opinion that the German Air Force was invincible and for accepting a medal from the Nazi government. .
             The events that took place in Lindbergh's life had a great impact on America. His achievements helped this country to move forward in directions that we may not have gone in if it were not for Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr. Starting out as a child working on his family farm, Lindbergh overcame the impossible, mastering the first solo flight across the Atlantic, and making himself an icon in the eyes of Americans.
             On February 4, 1902, in Detroit, Michigan, the boy who was to be a future icon was born. His full name was Charles Augustas Lindbergh, Jr. As a child, Lindbergh's parents had troubles with their marriage. The only thing that truly kept them together was the fact they were having a son. "Charles's father was a Republican congressman in Washington D.C."(Randolph), so his wife Evangeline and little Charles would travel back and forth from Little Falls, Minnesota to visit Charles Sr. in D.C. They did this because if they divorced, it would ruin Charles Sr.'s reputation in politics. Little Charles was a very self-sufficient child despite the disturbances his parents separation caused him. Charles loved both his parents and had great pleasure in visiting his father at work, which was the only thing that he likes about Washington. "Charles was an outdoors type of kid. He favored the great outdoors Minnesota offered him. At the age of six he already obtained his own gun and became a skilled marksman.
