A rhetorical analysis is written explanation about HOW a writer, or speaker, attempts to change the mind of his or her audience. You should be able to identify and discuss the diction, syntax, tone, imagery, and figurative language. Essentially, you will write an essay that shows your understanding of the rhetorical process at hand. An effective essay will demonstrate a full understanding of the interplay of the rhetorical triangle, which is credibility, logic, and emotions, which helps the author connect with the audience. You will carefully read a passage and choose appropriate devices used in the passage to write about. In this passage, the author has a purpose or an objective. To understand the purpose of the author, you must clearly understand what they want to portray. Next, you have to understand who the targeted audience, whether it is a general or specific audience, because the author has chosen devices that he/she believes is most effective for this certain audience. You have to read between the lines and understand why the author decides to use these strategies. You should not see yourself as part of the audience, but you will see the audience and the author, and what he/she is doing to affect the minds of the audience. If the author uses a series of words or details to make one point, then you should write about it in one paragraph. The final paragraph should be your analysis of the author's final words. End it by explaining how the final words are designed to win over the audience.
