Andy Warhol was an American artist born in Pittsburgh, during his life as an artist he revolutionised the way people perceived art to be and challenged social, political and cultural ideas in America. He was influenced mainly by his work in the commercial and advertising industry which made him question the use of mass produced items and used this technique to create duplicates of his paintings. This idea came from him asking the question "what matters now?". His main artistic approach was based around supply and demand. His outlook on art and it's meaning caused major criticism with people questioning his intentions and meaning behind his art calling him a business artist. With his attitude towards art he soon became one of the most popular artists of his time which allowed him to question what was art was and could be. With his fame, he not only questioned what could or couldn't be art but the different styles of art that could help express ideas. It soon became obvious especially after his death in 1987 that his approach and attitude towards art, along with his development in the Pop Art industry was deeming a major influence on artists and the art world as a whole. .
Warhol was born August 6th 1928 in Pittsburgh. He was the youngest of three sons and was a fragile child who suffered bouts of Sydenham Chorea which is a neurological disorder. He attended the Holmes School and took free art classes at Carnegie Institute. In 1945 he regain attending Carnegie Institute of technology until 1949. In this time he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Pictorial Design. After graduating he moved to New York. Artistically he made his debut in Glamour magazine in September of 1949. He quickly became one of the most successful illustrators of the 1950's. In this time he produced a large series of artists books. He created his first Pop painting based on comics and ads in 1961. His first exhibition of sculptures was held in 1964 which included hundreds of replicas of large supermarket product boxes.
