The Catholic Revelation

Even though Adam and Eve turned away from God, He did not abandon them and "promised them redemption and afforded them his covenant" (CCC70) God did this because his true plan was to be intimate with all humanity. His saving actions and love for his people was clearly evident through the Exodus, where he freed the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. The Israelites were his chosen people, called to be the light of the nation in a prior covenant that he made with Abraham. As part of the Israelite's part of the Mosaic Covenant, God gave Moses the Law summarized in the Ten Commandments. But humanity's inclination towards sin got in the way of his plan and the Israelites continued to go against the Law. It is because of this that God decided to send his own son down to Earth to reveal his plan and establish his covenant forever. The covenant of Mount Sinai proved to be not enough as God wanted an even greater intimacy with his people and inclinations to sin separated his people from God even more. The Israelites became virtually separated from God because of the influence of culture, social attitude and friends and ended up breaking their covenant numerous times. In response to this God decided to make another covenant where he promised to guide them and help them keep the new covenant. "I shall cleanse you of all filth, and of false idolsI shall put my spirit in you and make you keep my laws and respect and practice my judgements." (Ezekiel 36:25,27). And so God sent his only son to bring salvation to his people. Throughout the Old Testament, the coming of the Messiah, or anointed one was greatly prophesied. "A child will be born to us, a son will be given to us and the government will be on his shoulders" (Isaiah 9:6) This Messiah would save humanity from human sin and free us from all that enslaves us and takes away our freedom. We know now that Jesus was the prophesied Messiah and that his life, death and resurrection has brought the kingdom of God and reveals God's plan of salvation.
