She found a family that is willing to adopt Deo. Sharon gave a hand to Deo in any possible way she could, and this is what we all should be doing in life. Giving aid to people in need when one has the ability, make the world a less cruel place - especially when this world is full of people who are currently seeking help.
Nancy and Charlie Wolf made the biggest positive change in Deo's life. "The Wolfs had invited him to live with them" (67). With the Wolfs' support, he was able to go to school. Charlie and Nancy paid his school tuition; thus, Doe continued his educational career. Their compassionate and welcoming personalities led them to help Deo as much as they could. Nancy and Charlie supported Deo without seeking anything in return. This kind of support, people like the Wolfs give, makes the life of some people like Deo more sustainable.
Unlike the Wolfs or Muhammad, there were also people who were savage toward the others regardless to their situation. Thousands of people in Burundi were hungry, suffering or being tortured by militia groups. Genocide was so common that it made Burundians numb to their emotions. There was nothing they could do to make the dreadful situation they were in any better; thus, Burundians would say, "When too much is too much or too bad is too bad, we laugh as if it was too good" (36). These horrible actions, such as torturing and killing people in front of public are definitely inhumane and unbearable.
While we see that some people, and Deo's positive thinking led him to accomplish his dreams, we also see that there was a great deal of inequality that occurs in both New York and Burundi that made his dreams crash. Muhammad found a job for Deo, but they were not paying a fair wage to him. "No one could survive in New York on fifteen dollars a day" (21). That is not enough money for a human being to build and continue a life like every human deserves.
