Strength in What Remains by Tracy Kidder

In "Strength In What Remains," by Tracy Kidder, the character Deo teaches us how to stay strong in difficult situations and follow our dreams until they become reality. His journey was full of misery and atrocity, but by the help of others and his strong personality, he managed to accomplish his dream of becoming a doctor and helping people in need. There were some people in his story, who helped the vulnerable Deo in many ways. Some helped Deo to get a job, some bought him a book to educate himself, and some found a way for him to enroll school. While these big-hearted people make me feel more human by fighting against the worlds difficulty, the inhumane genocide in Burundi that caused hundreds of thousand innocent people to die, and the consistent violation of human rights which Deo faced his whole life overweigh the positivity and undermine my faith in humanity.
Some people in Deo's life, especially the ones that he met in New York, made his life more bearable. Those people he met in New York did not only think of themselves; they were also kind enough to give him a hand on his journey. For instance, Muhammad, "who worked at the airport as a baggage handler" (11), helped Deo to find a job right after he came to the U.S. Muhammad didn't want anything in return for his graciousness. With Deo's new friend's goodwill, he was able to work at a grocery store, and start earning money for his living. People like Muhammad make the world a fairer place to live because they aren't selfish, and they make an effort to help others when they can.
Some other people Deo met in New York helped him to achieve better things which allowed him to thrive. One day, he met a woman named Sharon when he was a grocery boy. Mostly because of his nice personality, she wanted to help him. Sharon arranged her doctor to see Deo for free (53), and bought him a book (54) so he could develop his English to adapt to the Western culture.
