Bilbo was once a timid and close minded hobbit, until the 13 dwarves and one wizard evolved him into the true hero he was supposed to be. By the end of the story he is round, dynamic, brave and most importantly, a hero. .
As Bilbo was minding his own business, Gandalf was searching for one last person to go with him and the dwarves on an adventure. Bilbo refused his offer at first, "Sorry! I don't want any adventures, thank you. Not today. Good morning! But please come to tea – any time you like! Why not tomorrow? Come tomorrow! Good-bye!" (6). Bilbo accidentally invited Gandalf to tea, which was the start of the journey. When all the dwarves were in his hobbit hole they laid out the plans of the adventure. Bilbo was to be used as the burglar. The dwarves were not sold on Bilbo, but Gandalf said, "Let's have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you" (19). It would be a long and difficult journey, and they felt it would be easier with a burglar.
The first time Bilbo exposed his hidden sense of adventure was early in the trip when he .
encountered a group of trolls. Bilbo was sent by the dwarves to investigate a strange fire; he saw it was being attended by trolls. Bilbo felt like he needed to do something, "He wished himself a hundred miles away yet somehow he could not go straight back to Thorin and Company empty handed" (35). Bilbo's first successful adventure came by accident. Bilbo was left in the goblins' cave. He ran into Gollum. Gollum and Bilbo played a game of riddles, with Bilbo's life on the line. After Bilbo defeated Gollum, he went searching for his ring that made him invisible. Gollum did not know that Bilbo had the ring, if Gollum had, he would have killed Bilbo. Bilbo probably never would have participated in it if his life had not been on the line.
Bilbo's sense of adventure reached new heights when he and the dwarves were on the doorstep to the secret adventure of Smaug's mountain.
