Fast food restaurants are more accessible than fresh food markets. It is important for there to be more fresh markets and fruit stores in all neighborhoods. For someone who wants a healthy meal, they would have to travel far. The problem is why they should have to travel far for food that is good for them. There are fast food restaurants everywhere, a person can travel ten minutes and see at least three quick foods on their way. In a New York study, they found "the drive-through traffic at popular fast-food stops continues to grow, along with the waist size of your average North American consumer. This year, receipts at quick-service restaurants in the U.S. account for 34.4 per cent of all restaurant sales -- that's US$172 billion of the total US$501 billion."(Intini, John). The study demonstrates how fast food is rapidly creating more restaurants that the Americans are not resisting. As a nation people need to come together to not spend their money on unhealthy foods so that the producers would have no choice, but to change the way they market, package, and price goods. In the article "Don't Blame the Eater" by David Zinczenko, he writes "Drive down any thoroughfare in America, and I guarantee you'll see one of our country's more than 13,000 McDonald's restaurants. Now, drive back up the block and try to find someplace to buy a grapefruit." (Zinczenko 392). He discusses this problem strongly, because it is hard for people to find alternative food options. People could work together to not buy from fast food restaurants, which can cause a decrease in the demand for them. Everywhere there is a fast food restaurant, but where do you see fruit markets? This is where the government assisting the change comes in. The government should decrease the amount of quick food restaurants being built and construct more fresh food markets.
