Women and Suffering - The Scarlet Letter

"If thou feelest it to be for thy soul's peace, and that thy earthly punishment will thereby be made more effectual to salvation, I charge thee to speak out the name of thy fellow-sinner and fellow-sufferer!" (shmoop.com). The Scarlet Letter exaggerates a never ending theme of sin. Hester Prynne's life was endorsed in the 17th century for committing a sin of adultery; The Puritans were people who believed in living for God. Throughout history and cultural beliefs, everyone tends to commit a sin. Whether they're big or small, the puritans believe people should be punished for any sin they commit. Therefore, committing a sin was considered a crime. Hester Prynne committed adultery and had a child. Hester Prynne became isolated from the society, dealt with hateful words and degrading looks and was punished for her doings. She had no choice but to stand on a scaffold with child in hands and face the community. She then had to wear the letter "A" to represent what she has done but out of strength and self-discipline, she didn't remove the letter, she embrace it to take ownership to what she did. In other countries, today, women still suffer cruelty based upon their religion or society beliefs dealing with Adultery (Hawthorne 60).
In many countries, whether it's in the United States or not, women suffer for committing adultery. That brings us to Somali, Africa. In Somali men are to have up to 4 wives but as for women, they can have only one spouse. A woman by the name Safiyo Ahmed Jimale was executed. She was a wife and a mother, being accused for having multiple affairs with other men, other than her own husband. The 33 year old mother was buried up to her neck and stoned to death by men wearing hoodies in all black. After her execution watched by many, they dug up her body and carried it away for a funeral for family and friends to say their last goodbyes. Later after the execution, it was known that she had been separated from her husband previously.
