John Scofield and Coastal Maine


Scofield goes on to describe the personality of the area's inhabitants as welcoming, however highly characteristic and extremely notable of the area in general. As in, with some cities, it is typical to be known more for the people that travel to visit for vacation, rather than their own inhabitants. Maine is different in this sense. The "people of Maine" are more easily characterized by the cities' own year-round inhabitants rather than its visitors. Scofield affectionately says the people of Maine are solid, good and are "sot in their ways". Regardless of who comes to visit these people of the northeast, Scofield says they will remain uninfluenced in how they behave and how they carry themselves. Once the people of the coast are given description, the author goes on to supply the attractions of the coast such as York Beach, Ogunquit's Summer Playhouse and Portsmouth.
             Scofield visited the the coast of the north eastern United States for the first time, as he was writing the article, in the late 1960's. Historically, this places the United States right in the midst of the Vietnam War Conflict.The time period in which the article was written could give us an idea of what it was like inside Scofield's mind when he wrote the article. America in the late 1960's was a time of adoration and appreciation of the natural and raw beauty of the great outdoors. The entire country was struck with division of opinion regarding the war in Vietnam. Because of this, United States citizens were left with little else to resort to for mutual appreciation. The natural beauty of the outdoors was an easy alternative. With the United States becoming less of a massive place and much more connected with the widespread use of televisions, radios, and other technology, the beauty of the different corners of the United States was becoming much more widely appreciated. Along with the committed involvement in the Vietnam War, the United States was gripped with fear from the Cold War, leaving citizens wondering what might come of nuclear warfare.
