Accepting Homosexulaity

Homosexuality has always been a part of the American culture, but lately, the awareness of the issue has increased. In this country's past, homosexuality has been hidden and the subject has been avoided. Today homosexuality is not only mentioned, it is discussed and debated over in lengths. Those who consider themselves homosexual today still face prejudice and stereotyping, but have also found much support and encouragement in the American culture. Although throughout American history homosexuality has been viewed negatively, in recent years, the United States has significantly changed its view to one of acceptance.
The American people, much like they have in years past on other issues, have divided themselves in beliefs and opinions of the morality of homosexuality. There are the people that have accepted and support homosexuals, such as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Society, and on the other end, there are the people who condemn and reject the way of life homosexuals live, but the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago states, "Although sharply divided, public attitudes toward gays and lesbians are rapidly changing to reflect greater acceptance" (Americans Move Dramatically Toward Acceptance of Homosexuality). Homosexuality has been documented throughout history, but recently the issue has had much attention in the spotlight with the legalization of "gay' marriage and the announcement from the Boy Scouts of America about the acceptance of homosexuals in their association. In a modern survey, sixty percent of Americans said that Homosexuality should be accepted. The United States' view on the issue of homosexuality has transitioned and changed to be more accepting of homosexuality with much influence coming from the younger generations (The Global Divide on Homosexuality). The media also has moved towards tolerating homosexuality.
