Personal Changes for a Healthy Diet


The founder of Incredible Smoothies, Tracy Russell, clarified that green smoothies are, "rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and other beneficial minerals," (Russell, 2015). Thanks to the high powered blender, which masked the traditional taste of dark greens, I was able to consume over a cup of spinach, for half of my week. Not only were the smoothies tasteful, but they also made for a quick and easy breakfast, whenever I was in a hurry.
             Subway has always been a large part of my diet. Since I go out of my way to eat there every day after class, I figured that adding a dose of spinach to each sandwich, would be an excellent way to add dark green vegetables to my diet. At first, I was skeptical of how spinach would taste, alongside my favorite lunch break choice. Luckily, I couldn't even taste the spinach. The bold taste and crunchy texture of the lush green leaves, seemed to dissipate when combined with thick slices of turkey, and marinara sauce. Once again, I was able to enjoy my favorite foods and spinach, at the same time. I am beginning to notice that eating healthier is far more of an easier goal to obtain, when taste is not a factor.
             The fifth day of my health journey was a success. It was my grandfather's seventieth birthday, and he decided that The Cheesecake Factory would be the best place to celebrate. Since I had already loaded up on the irresistible pumpernickel bread, I decided that I should redeem myself for my food sins, by consuming a healthy meal. Instead of my usual choice, an oversized bowl of spaghetti loaded with carbs, meatballs, and a side of garlic bread, I decided to go with a fillet of salmon, with a side of steamed spinach. The looks that I received from my family after telling the waiter what I wanted, were enough to show that this health conscious choice was out of my norm. Despite the awkward stares, I knew that I had made a wise decision. Not only was I getting a heaping of dark green vegetables, but I was also getting an essential fatty acid.
