Humanism in The Death of Ivan Ilyich

Ivan could be seen as allowing things to occur without making much choice; but in doing so, he is making the choice to accept the life that comes with the action of inaction.
Sartre's claim to man having no excuse is based on the idea that man is free. In this argument, there is no existence of God and therefore no values that govern the conduct of individuals. If this holds true in relation to The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Ivan is solely responsible for whom he becomes. Sartre states that in existentialism there is no belief in the power of passion (Satre, 2007). Ivan becoming an inauthentic man, drawn to the lifestyle of those in high standing is ultimately his own choice. Ivan leaves his old job to become an examiner of magistrate and in doing so he liked to " let others feel that here he was treating them amicably when he had the power to crush them." (Tolstoy, 2003) There is a clear display of Ivan knowing his capabilities and not acting on them, this is a choice he makes freely, a choice he is able to make due to who has become. Ivan chooses to become married because it is what people in his position do. It can be argued that he is not free as he is supposed to be married and it is expected of him. However, Ivan is pleasing himself in taking a wife (Tolstoy, 2003), and in doing so he is becoming what he think his superiors -those in a higher standing- think is right to do. Ivan becomes secluded after his wife's pregnancy, the things he expected to come from marriage did not occur "his wife began disrupting the ease and propriety of his life" (Tolstoy, 2003). Ivan can make no excuse for his seclusion. The decision to act, as he believed his superiors expected led to his decision to marry, which led to his wife's pregnancy and ultimately the jealousy, demand for attention and disruption of his life's propriety (Tolstoy, 2003). Ivan Ilyich becomes a person that is no longer the sociable person he was but is now submerged in his work and appearing of high standard.
