History and Uses of Cellophane


By 1912 Cellophane was formed into a thin flexible film used in gas masks. In 1917 they discovered that they could use this film for keeping food fresh, it is now known as Saran Wrap. It wasn't until the 1930's scientists realized that cellophane could be used in artificial kidneys. In the 1940's, Willem Kolff constructed the first dialyzer (Artificial kidney). It was very successful as he continued to treat people with renal failure using dialysis [2]. .
             Kidney Failure.
             Cellophane is used to combat kidney failure. A kidney is an organ about the size of a fist. Every human has two kidneys. They are located just under our ribs one on each side. Our kidneys serve the purpose of filtering blood to produce urine, composed of waste and extra fluids. From the Kidneys the urine flows to the bladder where it is stored. Kidney failure is also known as renal failure. It is when the kidneys stop working well enough for your body to function without dialysis or without a kidney transplant. The onset of kidney failure can occur very suddenly (acute renal failure) or it can happen slowly over time. In almost all cases, kidney failure is permanent. When it is permanent it is called end stage renal disease. .
             Kidney failure was first diagnosed back in the 1500's. Ever since then scientists and doctors have been trying to figure out a way of preventing it. Kidney failure is caused when; you have a condition that lessens the amount of blood flow to your kidneys, you have had direct damage to the kidneys, or the ureters become blocked and wastes cannot properly leave your body. Kidney disease affects roughly 10% of adults around the world [3]. The chart below shows the percent of people in the united states afflicted by chronic kidney disease (CKD). It indicates that this particular disease is most common among the aging population. .
             Properties of Cellophane and Dialysis.
             Cellophane has some very interesting properties; it is permeable to water vapor, it is transparent, it is 100% biodegradable, and it is completely waterproof.
