Media's Impact on Body Image

The models on magazine covers and on runways are dressed in couture from head to toe. These brands are seen as the clothing that makes women look sexier, yet most women cannot afford them. The fashion industry caters to such a minimal part of American society that it is no wonder why there is an increase in negative body image (Fryer).
Starting from a child's toddler years, our society is exposed to the unrealistic figures of Barbie dolls. "Though it is highly unlikely for a rail-thin woman to have natural DD-cup size breasts, toy manufacturers set this expectation by developing and marketing the Barbie doll, whose measurements are physically impossible," (Derenne). "Real life" Barbie dolls are created by the media and fashion magazines using photo shop, full faces of make-up, and a lot of airbrushing. They're portrayed on covers of magazines, billboards, and advertisements all over our country. Today, these artificial pictures of women are society's role models (Derenne). .
Women feel pressured to do whatever it takes to look like public figures shown in the media. Celebrities like Victoria Beckham, Demi Lovato, and Jessica Alba have battled with eating disorders, and women will go to that extent to try and look similar to these public figures, because they believe that's how they will achieve their look. In addition, studies show that "Twenty five years ago, the average fashion model was eight percent thinner than the average woman. Today that number has risen to twenty-three percent," (Derenne). Today's culture looks up to models and celebrities, therefore, making their bodies the ideal bodies. However, that is extremely unrealistic for most women. Aside from being discriminative about shape and size, the fashion industry is racist too (Racist Fashion). .
Even though America is racially diverse, the fashion industry clearly favors Caucasians (Racist Fashion).
