Oscilloscope - Measuring Period and Frequency

Moving the beam at a faster rate generates a graph that can be displayed as lines. The movement of the electron beam on horizontal axes at a constant rate generates a graph of voltage versus time. Each oscilloscope has different arrangement of controls but every oscilloscope uses the same components allowing the user to interact with any model.
This experiment was designed to introduce the oscilloscope as a measuring instrument. The oscilloscope is one of the common used tools to measure qualitative and quantitative measurements of voltage, frequency, phase and other measurements. .
In the present experiment three human produced sounds (hum, whistle and open moth note) were measured and the period of the signal from the oscilloscope was compared with calculated period and the percent of discrepancy was calculated. Same procedure was used to measure the period of the signal generated by the 2 tuning forks (480Hz and 512 Hz). The period was obtained by dividing the number of divisions by the sweep rate. The standard speed of sound at normal temperature and pressure is 34000 cm/s. The average measured speed of sound in this experiment was the slope of the graph between distance and time. The value of measured speed of sound was 35903 cm/s. The percent discrepancy between the two values is 5.59 % (1,3 from the oscilloscope info paper). The value for the speed of sound obtained experimentally is different from the standard value because there are factors that influence the experiment result. These factors are different than the standard conditions and therefore they affect the result. Temperature is probably the most important factor in sound propagation because heat is a form of energy and it affects how the molecules vibrate therefore sound waves can travel faster. Analyzing the value we can conclude that the temperature was higher than at the standard conditions. Other factors are the quality and the precision of the tools used to measure in this experiment.
