The Use of Sex in Teen Comedy Movies

The first being the idea of teen virginity scripts. Maura Kelly looks at the idea of virginity scripts and how they are three different types of virginity scripts that appear in most television and movies today. The first of these three is the abstinence script which views virginity as a gift, showing "the pleasures of virginity and the positive consequences for maintaining virginity." (Kelly, 482). The second virginity script is the management script that says "suggested teenage sexuality was inevitable, if not entirely desirable." (Kelly, 482) meaning that teenagers are going to have sex and that managing themselves before, during , and after sex is what is needed to be focused on. The last virginity script is the urgency script. "The urgency script portrayed virginity loss as not only a highly enjoyable activity but as necessary to affirm a gendered identity as a sexually sought-after individual" (Kelly, 482) Kelly is saying that the teens in films that are a part of the urgency script are hypersexual. This can be said about teens in the world today.
Teenagers are sexual beings. After a certain age, almost all teens start to have sexual interest (usually with one another), and the world sees this as well. Thus to appeal to these teens that are discovering their sexualities, advertisers, movie, television, and music producers sex up their content to catch the eyes of their target audience. In a Pediatrics article that studied sexy media matter, the team of authors Jane Brown, Kelly L'Engle, Carol Pardun, Guang Guo, Kristin Kenneavy, and Christine Jackson found that teens that were exposed to certain sexual acts either on television, in the movies, or in music were found to be thinking more about sex with their partners than other things. In conjunction, another article that was done in Communication Research by Jeffrey Gottfried, Sarah Vaala, Amy Bleakley, Michael Hennessy, and Amy Jordan looked at the different genres of media and how one genre may show more sexual content than another.
