             A few traits of Henry David Thoreau are demonstrated in the scene in which Emerson hires Henry. This scene starts off in Waldo's office with Thoreau being interviewed by Waldo. Waldo asks Henry what sort of work he would like to do. Henry says he would like to use his hands. The conversation then leads to Waldo asking if he has experience with children. Waldo asks this because he feels that his son Edward needs a father figure, since he is always gone. The scene then moves into Waldo asking how Henry wants to be paid, but Henry asks if it has to be money. Henry just wants to borrow a small piece of land near their pond because he feels he has already been paid. Henry then meets Edward and soon Waldo leaves. After Waldo leaves, the scene ends. In this scene, Thoreau demonstrates his lack of desire or need for money. his is shown when Henry says that he has already been paid. Henry says this because he feels that Waldo's lectures and ideas have already compensated for his future work. This scene also relates to other scenes because it shows Henry's love for simplicity and nature. .
             In society, Waldo represents a non conformist and occasionally a conformist. Waldo gives lectures about how people should have their own opinions, which represents his non conformist side. However, he contradicts himself after Edward is introduced, revealing his conformist side.
