Educating Females and the End of Poverty

             The World Bank.
The World Bank is an International Financial Institution created at the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference (so-called Bretton Woods conference) in 1944 and formally established in Washington D.C. on 27th December 1945. National Governments are the sole owners of the bank; its current shareholders are almost all of the UN member states (presently 187 out of 193) with the addition of the Republic of Kosovo. Voting powers are calculated according to a formula that weighs capital contributions and size of economic output, thereby resulting in effective control by Western developed countries. It must be noted that by virtue of an unwritten agreement between the U.S.A. and Western European countries all of the 12 World Bank presidents elected until today have been North American nationals.
The mission of the World Bank is to reduce global poverty. Its statutory aims are to improve living conditions in the poorest countries and reduce poverty in middle income and creditworthy poor countries. Such aims must be achieved through the provision of grants, preferential loans, expert advice and ancillary financial products (guarantees, risk management products, and analytical services). This multilateral organization sponsors and subsidies a wide range of programs that span specific infrastructure and industrial production projects as well as human development initiatives in the fields of universal education and public health. All projects are evaluated and feedback mechanisms are in place in order to ensure a positive contribution on many issues such as:.
             __Environmental protection.
             __Public health.
             __Education.
             __Quality of life.
             __Regional integration.
             __Conflict resolution and reconstruction.
             __Knowledge management and dissemination.
             __Gender equity.
What caught my attention is that the World Bank prominently displays slogans such as "Education is a development issue" on their communication material.
