Short Story - Beautiful Eyes

He had come bounding into the room, his face full of joy. .
"You found it!" he exclaimed. He had wrapped his small arms around Grace's thighs after taking the toy train out of her outstretched hand. All of the annoyance she had had for Michael before had faded into nothing when she saw how happy he was to have found his missing train. He had the same look in his beautiful eyes, his nose pressed up against the glass window, as he watched the train finally fade away behind a thicket of trees.
"Will there be another one, Mommy?" he asked Amy in earnest.
"Don't worry Mikey, there will be plenty more trains that you will see later on." she said smiling at him from the rear-view mirror. .
"Honey, it's getting a little stuffy in here. I think we should stop and get some ice cream and stretch our legs. Don't you?" Henry said as he smiled and winked at Grace. .
"Can we, Mommy?" were the last words Michael ever got to say. The truck was just passing a bridge when a drunk driver in a cumbersome semi had hit the family. Amy, who was behind the wheel, had died instantly. After the truck had gone tumbling off the bridge and into the deep, cold water, Henry hadn't survived. Grace was tangled in the seat belt and couldn't get it off. The water was rising quickly and even thought it was in the middle of July, Grace had never felt such cold water in her entire life. This life taking cold numbed every part of her unmovable body. At first, she could hear only ringing in her ears. As that faded she heard screaming. She didn't realize, until her throat gave out, that it was her own.
Lord, save me! Don't let me die. Please! She looked to her right and there was Michael. He was paralyzed, he couldn't move, couldn't scream. He could only watch as the water came nearer to his head. His normally beautiful, blue, cheerful, eyes were now swimming in fear. Those eyes, so close, but yet so far out of her reach made her stomach twist in pain.
