The civil rights movement had been a growing cause since the 13th, 14th, and amendments were passed in the 19th century. These abolished slavery, provided equal rights under the law, and black suffrage. Now, 100 years later, the issue is still at hand due to systems like the Jim Crow Laws that were passed on state-level legislations which prevented black americans from being in juries, elections, and going into businesses owned by whites. Organizations that are against these laws and pro-equality in society (though under federal law they were equal, in the south segregation and racism oppressed the african american community) like Martin Luther King's SCLC or the NAACP. With the segregation creating major issues, many are fighting these laws to create a better society and ultimately--a better country.
France lost control of it's Indochina territory of what is now called Vietnam in 1954. They lost the colony because of their conventional warfare tactics were unable to contend with the style of Guerrilla warfare that the vietnamese practiced. Now, as Ho Chi Minh intends to spread communist ideals throughout the country from north to south, the US must step in to defend democracy. In 1964 the US took control of almost all of the South Vietnamese military and began to fight the communist forces. 200,000 men were sent to fight and later a draft sent about 35,000 men a month to fight the war. The US began to suffer losses due to the same reason that the French did--their inability to fight the guerrilla style of warfare that the viet cong implemented. The Peoples Republic of China and the USSR promoted the communist North Vietnam while the US supported South Vietnam.
The Great Society refers to a plan in which President Johnson challenged his cabinet to create a social welfare system. The American people called for the government to take greater control of the economy in order to prevent similar occurrences to that of the Great Depression.
