On Meritocracy and Primary Education

A student's merit is not determined by his parents' merit or ability. In a way, this is like survival of the fittest, where only the smartest parent who is good at interviews, or has a lot of money to manage projects in the schools, and so forth, manages to secure a place in the school for his/her child. .
Most civilian parents are at a loss for how to counter these grueling tasks, while the better equipped or resourceful parents get to get a place in the school for their child with ease. This serves as a barrier for many lesser privileged parents. Although the school does not know it, the school is enrolling all the children of "rich-people" into their school. This gives the rich and resourceful parents an unfair advantage over the lower-income ones. Schools should give all students an equal chance to go and study in the school. Because ultimately, it is the child and not the parent who studies in the school, so there is no reason why the parents should be the factors or criteria the school decides on whether to grant the child a place in the school. Comparatively, the PSLE S1 Posting exercise is so much more fairer compared to the P1 registration. Unlike the P1 registration, the school the student is posted to is based on his or her PSLE T-Score and not based on how rich or powerful the parents are. The student is the deciding factor, not the parents. This is an accurate gauge of the correct school the student should be posted to with regard to his ability and not whether he is rich or poor. .
             From Volunteering to Indirect Bribery.
It would be relevant to the context of this commentary to bring out Part 1 of the artifact. The last paragraph is a quote from a housewife who plans to register her daughter in a popular girls' school. "The P1 registration system has become like a gambling game and parents will do anything to buy more chances for their children" Quoted from Part 1 of the artifact, I agree with this statement.
