Going to War - All Quiet On the Western Front

In Europe, a group of Serbians living in Bosnia were expressing their nationalism when they decided to kill Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. During this time, they felt the need to ignite a fight because of the oppression that many Serbs faced while Austria-Hungary was in control of Bosnia: "Princip's family were Serb farmers who made meager living in Bosnia. Having grown under Austrian rule, he felt that he must take action under the oppressors. Princip joined Unity or Death, a terrorist group commonly known as the Black Hand. .
Organized by Bosnian Serbs, its goal was to organize all South Slav peoples into a single nation (Evidence Round I)." This quote best explains the reasons of Bosnian Serbs wanting to start a war against the Austrians. People such as Gavril Princip and his fellow members of the Black Hand were trying to find a reason to start war in order for the two countries to go to war and fight for the state of Bosnia, which would also allow them to fight for freedom they would earn under Serbian rule. This is a good example of nationalism because the Serbs want to express pride in their culture and return to the rule under their natives, and join fellow Serbians. Another example of nationalism is from the story All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque. In the story, Paul Bäumer and his other friends in the German army were talking about how they were influenced and motivated to join the war: "When we went to the district commandant to enlist, we were a class of twenty young men, many of whom proudly shaved for the first time before going to the barrack. Our thoughts of a career and occupation were as yet of too unpractical a character to furnish any scheme of life. We were still crammed full of vague ideas which gave to life, and the war also and ideal and almost romantic character (Remarque 21)." Remarque uses the language "whom proudly," to demonstrate that young German soldiers are passionate about going to war because the want to express how much they love their country.
