Isolation plays a significant role within the novel and notably affects multiple characters, but why and how does isolation impact these certain individuals? These studies offer an explanation to readers about the actions of both Victor and the creation. Although for different reasons, they both face extreme social difficulties due to the social isolation that takes place in their lives. The main character, Victor Frankenstein, grew up in a very stable and privileged family. His parents made his life simple and enjoyable, but his character is truly revealed when he decides to proceed his life on an entirely different path than what his parents had paved for him. As he grows up, he spends an outstanding amount of his time searching for answers to understand life and it's forms. "I was, to a great degree, self taught with regard to my favorite studies. My father was not scientific, and I was left to struggle with a child's blindness, added to a student's thirst for knowledge" (Shelley, 29). Victor being intrigued in his studies, caused him to withdraw from his family and take the life out of his own self. His energy, time, and everyday life was accustomed to his experiment in the laboratory and compelled him to completely close all doors to communicate with anything and everything. Victor chose to live an alienated and isolated life. His family, including Elizabeth and his father, went out of their ways multiple times to communicate with him throughout the novel. He refused to let them into his life, and selfishly spent his time alone creating a monstrous mistake. Victor Frankenstein was more than eligible to be accepted into society whereas the creature had no choice but to be rejected by the world. "I must absent myself from all I loved while thus employed. Once commenced, it would quickly be achieved, and I might be restored to my family in peace and happiness" (Shelley,156).
