Medicare and the Aging Population

In her article " The Other Health Care Crisis-America's Elderly," Martha Stewart argues that health care is too expensive, therefore this gives seniors with low income less opportunity to receive proper care(1). Martha makes a valid point. Many seniors who cannot afford health insurance will have to find another alternative to living a longer life. I agree. Seniors without health insurance who could develop cancer will most likely not be able to detect it fast enough because they do not have access to any type of chemotherapy. .
Seniors have to rely on family members and friends to take care of them because they cannot afford life insurance or the luxury of living in a nursing home. Martha Stewart also cites experts when she writes, "48 million men and women who, according to a recent report from the National Alliance for Care giving, are caring for older family members and friends"(1). The number of family members having to care for their eldest ones is growing day by day. Family members are dedicating their time and money to take care of their aging parents. Martha explains, "more then 75 percent of Americans receiving long term care rely solely on family and friends to provide assistance"(1). Many of these family members also have to juggle a full time job and providing care of their elder one. The elderly who need constant medical attention rely on their family members to help them survive. The costs of nursing homes could change this issue. If nursing homes reduce the cost of residency more elderly can be cared for and their family members won't have to juggle work and helping there loved ones.
I can relate to this issue. My grandfather was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of thirty. This was a very unfortunate disease that kept him in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. After years of lugging my grandfather's wheel chair up and down the stairs my grandmother became too weak to care of him.
