Homosexuals and the Right to Love

Married couples are thus much better off than unmarried couples, giving relationships the ability to grow stronger and deeper. .
According to the article by Austin Cline, Arguments for Gay Marriage: Moral and Social, "gay couples will be better off" because "the most important aspect of marriage is that it establishes a legal and social relationship which makes it easier for people to be there for each other economically, emotionally, and psychologically." There could be many benefits if same sex marriage was allowed everywhere instead of just in certain states. For example, "families with gay members will be better off" (Cline). Because gays can't marry, it's very difficult for partners to help each other in difficult situations like medical crises. The burden of support and decision making typically falls in the laps of other family members when it should fall to one's chosen life partner. If people know that they can rely upon their relative's spouse, they can be far less anxious about what will happen to their loved one not just in the context of a crisis, but in general, too. "About 78% of non married couples rely on family members instead of their partner because of the lack of commitment felt in the relationship" (Remarks). Families wouldn't be bothered emotionally or financially. Revenue from gay marriage comes from marriage licenses, higher income taxes (the so-called "marriage penalty"), and decreases in costs for state benefit programs (Gay). Also, the Comptroller for New York City found that "legalizing gay marriage would bring $142 million to the city's economy and $184 million to the state's economy over three years" (Gay). .
There are many positives effects in gay marriage, but it continues to be a debate in whether it should be permitted or not. While there seems to be many pros to same sex marriage, it is easy to understand why "48 % of most Americans oppose of same sex marriage" (Same).
