A Look at Amish Ethnocentrism

The Amish consider such things as radio and television as a waste of time and money. .
Another reason that people today find the Amish culture to be odd is because of the way they dress. The author of Amish Fiction, Cindy Woodsmall, explains very well why the Amish dress the way they do. She says "Our clothing, as English, often reflects who we are. We can identify the age, interests, economic status, and cultural background of a person just by glancing at his or her clothing. Even more commonly, we use uniforms to identify some professions. Often an individual's identity is tied to the way he or she chooses to dress. The Amish use this principle as a way to visually show others their beliefs."The Amish people wear dark colored old-fashioned clothing. When asked why they wear such clothing some simply respond that they believe bright colored clothing draws unneeded attention to themselves. They say that they don't feel that it's necessary to acquire any more negative attention to them than they already get on a daily basis. They would much rather stick to their earth-toned and old-fashioned clothing than wear t-shirts and jeans that we consider to be a normal dress. .
Amish dress clothing has hook and eye closures or straight pins to hold the clothing together instead of having buttons, zippers, or velcro like normal clothing would usually acquire. The women wear calf-length, plainly-cut dresses in simple solid colors. Amish women wear aprons at home. If the woman is unmarried, the apron is white. If the woman is married, her apron will be a purple or black color. They also wear a cape that is a triangular piece of cloth. They start wearing this cape at the beginning of their teenage years. It is pinned onto the apron. Amish men usually have the every-day outfit of dark-colored trousers with a dark coat or vest, suspenders, and a hat. In the warmer months, the men wear broad-brimmed straw hats.
