Course Reflection - Feminism

Radical feminism aims to oppose standard gender roles so as to reorder society. With radical feminists they view patriarchy as dividing rights, privileges and power based on gender which causes oppression for women and gives privilege to men. .
             Cultural feminism on the other hand understands that women and men have biological differences that set them apart. They believe the women tend to be more kind and gentle in nature and consider that this characteristic should be used as a benefit. They utilize these differences and concentrate on the gender differences between men and women and hope to establish and create a more "women-centered" culture. (Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology Online. (n.d.)) Cultural feminist agree that society encourages masculine behavior such as being aggressive and competitive. These characteristics are believed to be the cause of assaults and domestic violence. Some behaviors are encouraged because modern society shows that to achieve what you want in life you are successful if you show aggression and are competitive. Cultural feminists think that in would be more beneficial to society to encourage more feminine behavior.
             Out of all the different types of feminism there is one underlying common goal: To eliminate sexism and discrimination within politics, the workplace, and overall society. They all tackle the issues in different ways and everyone provides some contribution. Whether the importance is centered on biological differences, domestic restrictions, or education and political rights, the need for feminism is still prevalent because men and women are still not treated as equals. (n.d.)) Being a feminist can bring negative implications like being called a man hater, but it is not a bad thing.
