Mise-en-Scene - The Graduate

Robinson out of his room. Mrs. Robinson ignored Benjamin, sat on his desk, and lit a cigarette. Being pushy, Mrs. Robinson inquired why Benjamin was so upset, and he told her the reasons. Then Mrs. Robinson, untraditionally a very confidant, dominating woman for the time, asked Benjamin to take her home; however, Benjamin just wanted to be alone, so he offered her his keys to his new car, so she can drive herself. Stating that she was unable to drive because of her consumption of alcohol, Mrs. Robinson ordered Benjamin to take her home. Benjamin, a very respectful young man, took her orders and drove her home. As they arrived to the Robinson home, Benjamin stopped the car, and she just sat there. Benjamin, being an obedient, respectful young man, got out of the car and opened the car door for her. Mrs. Robinson ordered him to walk her to the door because it was dark then persuaded him to come into the house. Benjamin was unnerved about being in the Robinson household and just wanted to leave. Mrs. Robinson lured him into the bar room. She offered him a drink, and he refused, but she disregarded his refusal and handed Benjamin a drink. Clearly uncomfortable about being there, Mrs. Robinson ignored Benjamin's forward requests to leave. .
             The Temptress.
Mrs. Robinson is dressed in a tiger-striped dress with the background setting of tropical plants. This implies that she is a predator like a tiger in the jungle, and Benjamin is the prey. She is standing asymmetrically in the shot, a little to the right but mostly in the center, while Benjamin is in blurred focus off to the left side. She looks as if she is a clever predator about to pounce on her victim. Empowerment over Benjamin is clearly conveyed in the shot, as is the message that she is the dominant one in this situation. Mrs. Robinson is in a shadowy shot, with some side lighting, implying a dark side of Mrs. Robinson. .
             Vulnerable and Virtuous.
