Women, particularly from Asia, make up the majority of migrant workers and often do not keep their earnings as they send their earnings back home to support their families. Morris adds, "they are paid low wages, and despite the fact that they contribute significantly to the Canadian economy, they are not entitled to many benefits such as EI" (Morris, 2014, para.19). The population of migrant women is increasing in Canada. In particular, Filipino women are typically employed through the Live-In Caregiver Program. These women often work as "live-in caregivers" or "nannies." A study completed by Brigham (1995) explores the perceptions and experiences of Immigrant Filipino Caregivers in Edmonton. The data that is presented in the study was collected through qualitative interviews with nine women who have come to Canada as live-in caregivers. The study looks at the factors that impact the ability of the Filipino caregivers to participate and succeed in Canadian society. Brigham (1995) identifies the following factors: "the labour, class and status characteristics of domestic work; community involvement; previous cross-cultural experience; family and community ties in the Philippines; ethno- cultural discrimination; lack of accessibility to educational institutions and state agencies; and the effects of policies and regulations governing the Live-in Caregiver Program" (para. 4). .
